NEI Investments had previously filled a lawsuit against RIM which demanded their Co-CEOs be split in the interest of the shareholders. Well today, via a press release we have learned NEI has withdrawn this proposal and has instead opted to form a review committee for this purpose.

A class action lawsuit was filed not too long ago against RIM claiming that the company misled investors regarding its financial condition and business prospects. We’re not sure exactly what’s going on here or what the law says about these investments, but it seems like the recent stock plunge has something to do with it. Chances are that an investment firm has lost a lot of money in RIM stock and is looking to mitigate that loss with a lawsuit payback. What investors should be doing is not reacting so emotionally to the market. Smartphone sales are up globally and RIM is well positioned to accommodate this growth. So Relax.

Poynt has announced it has acquired a nice set of patents. The portfolio of patents will give Poynt the edge for delivering multi-mode location based E-directory services, enabling method, system and apparatus.The new patent marks an important protective feature and barrier to entry for competitors of the Company’s location-based search model, allowing for the delivery of location-based, contextual and relevant data, sorted by proximity to users.

Poynt now allows users to pair their BlackBerry smartphone to their BlackBerry Playbook Tablet. With the pairing, you can browse listings and maps on your roomy Playbook screen while initiating calls to businesses, adding contacts to the address book and more on your BlackBerry.
Poynt users can search for businesses, people, movies, events, restaurants, gas prices and weather information in their local area. When users locate a listing that interests them they can click to get a map, get directions, look up movie times, access movie trailers, browse restaurant reviews and book dinner reservations all within the Poynt app.

Winner: Chiesi Farmaceutici — Chiesi Farmaceutici S.P.A. is an Italian pharmaceutical company. To show the efficacy of aspecific drug for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Chiesi began a clinical trial involving 2,000 patients in 19 countries. Working with TechMobile, a BlackBerry® Alliance Program member, Chiesi developed a BlackBerry® application that is designed to let trial patients securely submit a daily health questionnaire about their symptoms. Data is collected automatically by a central system. Chiesi choose the BlackBerry® solution because of its security features. Winner: UPMC — UPMC is a global health enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with approximately 50,000 employees and 400 outpatient sites. UPMC deployed BlackBerry® smartphones with SmartRoom technology to nurses, transporters and clinicians at UPMC Mercy, one of its 20 hospitals. The SmartRoom pulls data from the electronic medical record (EMR) to display patient room assignments, tasks and vital patient information on screens at the nurses’ stations and now on the BlackBerry smartphone. Early Monday May 2nd, Research In Motion announced its intentions to bring its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) its mobile device security and administration services to both Android and iOS. Through its acquisition of ubitexx, the Canadian company is looking to expand the portfolio of mobile devices its BES solution supports. “The single web-based console is being designed to provide IT administrators with a simple and efficient way to distribute software and manage policies, inventory, security and services for BlackBerry devices, as well as other mobile devices,” reads the press release. “IT administrators will be able to manage devices over-the-air, including activating devices, distributing software and applications, locking or wiping devices, enforcing and resetting device passwords, setting IT policies, and managing optional mobile applications for end users.
