UberSocial for BlackBerry updates to version 1.250 – Brings direct OS7 support and much more

UberSocial

Today UberSocial has announced a rather huge BlackBerry update in which they added direct support for BlackBerry 7 and much more. UberSocial has always been a rather popular client on the BlackBerry platform, and they have continued to support and update the application while bringing as many new features as possible, and this time they come back with another huge update. Check out some of the changes:

  • Direct support for the latest OS 7 BlackBerry devices
  • For BlackBerry OS 6.0 and 7.0 devices we now support the home screen message notification bar so DMs, @replies/mentions and inner circle tweets will show up there for quick access from the device home screen. When you see the mini UberSocial icon, click the bar and the tweets/DMs that caused the notification will be displayed along with a snippet of the tweet. Clicking the tweet snippet will take you directly to it.
  • Fixed bug where mini-icon would sometimes have a zero next to it
  • Improved load times for the inner circle timeline
  • Added a ‘Theme’ menu itme so you can easily change themes from the home timeline without going into options
  • Changed the menu text of ‘My Timeline’ to ‘My Tweets’ to more accurately reflect the functionality
  • Support for new device screen sizes for installable themes

While you may think that is a lot, that isn’t all the changes, a full list of changes can be found on their site, along with download links.

ElcomSoft Password Breaker gives you access to BlackBerry Wallet and Password Keeper

One of the great things about BlackBerry devices is the ability to password protect the device itself, as well as certain applications or areas on the device from prying eyes. Browse BlackBerry App World you’ll find a whole host of third party apps that allow you to password protect files, folders, photos, BBM, website passwords etc but the BlackBerry itself has one built in already – Password Keeper. You can also download a BlackBerry app that lets you save billing information, credit card details etc to save you time in filling out forms. Of course this is also password protected with a master password. You also would not want anybody accessing that kind of information, bringing me to the point of this post. ElcomSoft, a sotware company, has developed the first commercially available product that allows you to access passwords that are stored in Password Keeper as well as the information stored in BlackBerry Wallet.

Free MagicBerry IPD Reader updated to v3.10

Way back in the middle of November 2010, Ronen introduced one of my favourite apps,  MagicBerry to all of us. Well, fret not, this app is still in constant development. In a nutshell, MagicBerry is a Blackberry IPD reader is able to read and extract the following database from the mobile IPD backup file: SMS Messages, Phone Call Logs, Address Book, Service Book, Tasks, memos, Calendar and export them. It also lets you split or merge BlackBerry backup files along with editing service books. You are even able to export to a CSV format.

I highly recommend this app to everyone out there, and as a freeware, it would not hurt to try!

Let SugarSync Know You Want a PlayBook App Now!

sugarsync

Its no big secret that I am a big fan of SugarSync. They made my day earlier this week by adding folder sync to their BlackBerry smartphone app but there is a major hole in their BlackBerry support. They currently do not have an app for the BlackBerry PlayBook and their website seems to act up for some PlayBook users. I reached out to SugarSync to see what they had to say about PlayBook support.

SugarSync got back to us and let us know that they are still monitoring how the market reacts to the PlayBook and if they see enough demand they will develop an app. You want to know how to show SugarSync that there is demand for it? Request a PlayBook app in this thread on their forums. SugarSync told us they keep a close eye on their forums and it influences their feature development decisions.

About SugarSync’s website acting up in the PlayBook browser they have been getting mixed messages. According to many customers the browser experience works fine (I would say about 90% in my experience) but some users have expressed complaints. SugarSync does not have any timelines but they are researching the issue and are investigation how they can optimize their website for the PlayBook.

So what are you waiting for? Make sure to make your voice heard in the SugarSync forums.

Soocial Syncs Your Contacts Between Multiple Sources & Your BlackBerry

all_devices

We mentioned Soocial a LONG time ago in November of 2008. Since then the service has come out of beta and really fleshed out. A friend asked me if there was a service that lets you sync your contacts between your BlackBerry, Gmail, Google Apps, and Outlook and I told him to look Soocial up. In that vein I thought it would also be worth mentioning it to all of you.

Soocial is a really slick service but the big problem is the cost. The service is free to sync up to 250 contacts between two sources. If you want to start synching more like Gmail, Outlook, Google Apps, Yahoo, Windows Live, and more you will have to pony up for a monthly plan starting at $4.99. Soocial is definitely worth a look if you need such a service for work or can live with the free plan at www.soocial.com. Otherwise check out Gist.

3rd Party Apps Work Over Bridge After OS Update

This was not announced by RIM with the recent OS update but 3rd party apps including Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook work now when you have it connected via bridge. This means you don’t have to have Wi-Fi connection to use your PlayBook. I tested this as soon as Poky from BlackBerry India told me about it. Facebook, and Blaq worked as soon as I opened the apps. I know it works because I am nowhere near a Wi-Fi connection. The regular browser also works. Not sure if RIM did not mention this because they did not want to make the carriers mad or it is a glitch. I think this is really awesome the fact that it works and I hope they do not do away with it.

Let us know if yours also works over Bridge?

SugarSync updated to 2.1, offers SD card sync and offline access

SugarSync 2.1

SugarSync is by far one of my favorite applications to have on my BlackBerry. It’s one of the few apps I have loyally installed on each of my BlackBerry smartphones over the past couple of years. By making use of SugarSync, you can access your files from anywhere – a traffic jam, the beach, the toilet; anywhere! It’s not just read-only access to your documents; it’s access, edit and then sync. Through the application you can stream your entire music collection without having to access a single USB or set up WiFi Music Sync. You can also sync and share files and/or folders with your contacts. This means eliminating the need to run back to the office to retrieve your client the documents you need.

Just before I went to bed last night, I noticed BlackBerry App World notifying me that an update was available for SugarSync. What else could they possibly stuff into this application? Check it out:

  • You’ve got offline access: Now sync files and entire folders to your BlackBerry for offline access. It’s perfect for accessing your stuff on an airplane.
  • You’ve got SD card sync (perfect for backing up your photo library): Snap lots of photos on your BlackBerry, but hate the process of getting it onto your computer? You can now back up and sync anything on your SD card, including your entire photos folder, to the Cloud and your computers. No wires required.
  • You’ve got (even more) security: All mobile transactions have always been encrypted, but we’re going further by giving you an option to add a PIN code to access the app.
  • You’ve got better performance and stability: Our aim is to make the app as efficient as possible. We made big improvements here.

Not bad for a company that also offers 5GB of storage to start…for free! You can increase this by upgrading, referrals or going through the Getting Started steps.
