France Telecom CEO on RIM: Not Actually Declining But Needs to Fix Quality Problems

france telecomFrance Telecom is the 3rd largest carrier in Europe and has over 216 million customers spread over mobile, fixed line, internet, digital television and IT services. Its CEO is Stephane Richard, and in a recent interview with All Things D, he had a few things to say about RIM. First, which speaks volumes to the media’s perception of RIM that doesn’t jive particularly well with the numbers, Stephane says “[RIM] is not really declining. It’s still popular in Europe.” Stephane also continues by saying that RIM has had quality issues and that in order to stay the course and remain competitive, it needs to address these quality problems. This would probably be a fair judgement as RIM has had a few devices such as the Storm that had many quality concerns and its old trackball hardware which caused many to be frustrated with their device. Here is the exact quote:

On RIM:

It’s not really declining. It’s still popular in Europe. They have customers and users that are quite faithful to them. It works more or less like a community of people. It’s often families that are big BlackBerry users, and of course companies.

They have had some quality problems in the recent period which is a concern, especially with the next generations of devices.

In my view as a customer, or as a partner of them, I think they really should fix very quickly their quality problems.

Learn Random Facts While Your BlackBerry Charges Using WikiSaver App

Now this is pretty cool. WikiSaver released an application recently that acts as a type of interactive screensaver. The app can be used when you’re not charging your device by simply selecting the WikiSaver icon. Here’s how it works:

“When plugged in, a random page from Wikipedia shows on your BlackBerry screen. If you click the trackpad/trackball or hit the back button the screen disappears.”

If Wikipedia doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are plans to include other similar websites to the app so you have even more options.

How to archive Applications using BlackBerry App World

Did you know that you can easily archive and reinstall an application downloaded from BlackBerry® App World™ while using your BlackBerry® smartphone? Archiving applications allows you to manage your BlackBerry smartphone’s application memory in addition to removing applications that you don’t frequently use.

When you are archiving an application, the application files will be placed in the built-in media storage by default. If the built-in media storage doesn’t have enough free space or doesn’t exist on your particular BlackBerry smartphone, an external media card can be used to store the installation files. (Note: If you do not have a BlackBerry smartphone with built-in media storage and you are not using an external media card, you will not be able to archive applications.)

Power Saving Tips for your BlackBerry Smartphone

It might be a stretch to call this “going green”, it isn’t on par with using reusable bags or replacing your light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs, but these are a few tips to help you maximize your battery charge!

Network Connections
Turn off unused connections when not in use for example: Wi-Fi ® Bluetooth® (Manage Connections)
Use “Auto On/Off” (Options>AutoOn/Off)
Use a single mode only.  Choose 2G or 3G rather than 2G and 3G.  (Options>Mobile Network)

Applications
When exiting, be sure to close the app, not leave it running in the background.  (Close with the ESC key, the rounded arrow not red power end key.  Or, choose Menu button and scroll down to close)
Log out of applications when they are not needed.

BlackBerry 6 Coming to The Bold 9700, Bold 9650, and Pearl 3G

I didn’t notice that there was some additional good and bad news attached to RIMs announcement of BlackBerry 6. RIM has specifically called out that the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9650, and BlackBerry Pearl 3G will all be getting OS 6.0 “subject to carrier certification restriction in the months ahead.” That loosely translates into many leaks of the OS until AT&T and Verizon finally certify them.

This is really confusing since this really does not break down on the same 256mb vs 512mb we were thinking. It looks like no SureType devices are getting BlackBerry 6 and trackball devices are out too. Why is the BlackBerry Storm2 and the 8500 off this list? Who knows. I can think that maybe there is no trackball support which is why the Tour 9630 was left out but hopefully the BlackBerry 9300 will be getting the 6.0 treatment.

So what do you think of these details? Are you pissed that your device is not getting BlackBerry 6? Or are you happy that your 9700 is going to make the cut?

BlackBerry Curve 8910 Officially Announced by China Mobile

We haven’t heard too much about the BlackBerry Curve 8910 (codename Atlas) as it’s a device that will not be released in North America, but it has no been officially announced by China Mobile. Long story short, it’s basically an 8900 running OS 5, GPS, a 3.2MP camera and does not have 3G or WiFi (to appease the Chinese government). The device is supposed to include “evolved EDGE” which maximizes 2G capabilities, but details regarding this have not yet emerged. What’s odd is that the device was released with a trackball as we were all under the assumption that RIM would be going solely with the trackpad going forward. If we have any Chinese members who are going to go pick one up, let us know what you think.
