T-Mobile to offer prepaid phone in 6,000 Family Dollar locations

T-Mobile announced on Tuesday that it is now offering the LG GS170, a prepaid phone, in 6,000 Family Dollar stores around the United States. As you might expect from a phone being sold at a dollar store, the $30 GS170 offers a relatively basic feature set. It offers a large keypad, a VGA camera, Bluetooth 2.1 and support for e-mail. The phone will be available with T-Mobile’s no annual contract Monthly 4G plans, which includes the carrier’s $50 unlimited talk, text and web option. “T-Mobile’s track record for providing quality service and customer support fits well with our culture and commitment to the customer, and we are very excited to take our partnership to the next level and begin selling the company’s devices as well,” Family Dollar divisional vice president Bob Giles said, suggesting that Family Dollar will begin to stock more T-Mobile devices in the future.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 9360 Launching September 14th?

TMobile 93602 TMobile 9360

While the Curve 9360 would have looked hot a year ago it really pales compared to the latest BlackBerry 7 devices like the Bold 9900. Still there will definitely be a market for it in the low end BlackBerry form factor which the Curve line invented. We heard that T-Mobile will hopefully get the Bold 9900 on August 31st according to a new leak from TmoNews it looks like it will be followed up by the Curve 9360 coming September 14th to T-Mobile.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 appears in leaked T-Mo docs, reveals August 29th release date and $300 price

If you’re an abiding RIM fan who’s itching for a new ‘Berry addiction, your next fix is soon at hand. After AT&T put its cards on the table — along with Sprint and US Cellular — an internal T-Mobile document now suggests the Bold 9900 will arrive at the Magenta-clad carrier on August 29th. Sadly, your patience (and loyalty) is going to cost you, because this touchscreen endeavor carries a $300 price tag, and like Ma Bell’s model, it features only 14.4Mbps HSDPA. Sure it’s steep, but that’s all the better for expensing to the corporate account, no?

T-Mobile Classic And Value Rate Plans Go Live

Right on schedule T-Mobile has unveiled the Classic and Value rate plan selections and they are now ready for your buying pleasure. The new plans represent yet another industry first for T-Mobile as they attempt to move customers away from the equipment subsidy model that has been a staple of the American wireless industry for years. Time will tell how receptive customers are to the changes T-Mobile is making and whether or not a widespread shift in the industry is possible. If T-Mobile is successful at an offering that reduces the monthly cost without a subsidy on equipment the question will come as to whether or not the industry at large is ready for such a dynamic shift in purchasing devices? Will this effort succeed or fail, what say you?

AT&T Says T-Mobile Deal Necessary For Spectrum Needs

The AT&T T-Mobile deal stories just keep on coming with this report from CNN stating that AT&T needed T-Mobile for spectrum needs or face their own growth problems.

Speaking in Orlando AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega stated that AT&T would face significant challenges “in the short term,” without purchasing T-Mobile. No time frame was given as to when AT&T might face a crisis of spectrum shortage but acknowledged that AT&T had to make a move within the next 3 years.

“With this deal, we’re set,” says de la Vega says regarding the acquisition of T-Mobile spectrum.

“One of the key drivers (for the deal) was the need for additional spectrum,” de la Vega said on a panel at the CTIA Wireless conference. “It resolves the pending spectrum challenges that we’re facing in major cities.”

With AT&T hoping that a T-Mobile purchase will alleviate coverage troubles in major cities, it will still face a tough road in receiving FCC and DOJ approval.
