Global Alert Network v3.0: Informative And Preventive, Available In BlackBerry App World

The last time I had tried GAN on my BlackBerry, I did write a short article about it. What I like about it is that it contains alerts for serious traffic and weather issues, and alerting you as they come. Stay ahead of the game, check it out…

It would be in your best interest to know if there were an upcoming flood or tsunami heading your way, an earthquake, or any sort of major weather catastrophe. And with the Global Alert Network, your BlackBerry can be the ultimate weather and traffic alert system for you. Don’t be caught surprised and unprepared with the upcoming weather issues, be ready and ahead. That’s what the Global Alert System can do for you.

The only con this app does have is that when you contact customer service, you have no support or reply. That was the only downfall I saw. Other than that, I’m really liking that it does what it does. I think it’s extremely crucial for those who live in areas where the weather hasn’t been the best such as tornado alley or the flooding rivers and rain.

You can grab the Global Alert Network free for your BlackBerry from BlackBerry App World. Let us know what you think of it.

Active Alerts – an early warning application

Active Alerts

The National Weather Service provides forecasts and warnings for the United States. Its official task is to provide “weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy.” Recently, with the number of tornados and flooding that have tragically affected so many people, being alert and being prepared is key. In BlackBerry App World, an application called Active Alerts was recently released. Through Active Alerts users can learn of current alerts and what to do in response to the situation.

These alerts can be filtered through various options which include; location (by choice or by GPS), type, severity and type (you know, in case you want to ignore tornadoes or fires). Users can then decide what interval to use when refreshing alerts. Once set up, you can then navigate through the specified alerts. Details will include all of the affected locations, effective date/time and probability. Tapping into the power of notifications, Active Alerts can cause your Blackberry to sound a tone or vibrate when the alert is of an extreme and/or severe nature. It’s another level of personal security you can use, especially if you live in an area prone to such disastrous activity. Active Alerts is available for $2.99 from BlackBerry App World.

Mr. Number updated – new status feature helps block even more unwanted calls and text messages

Mr. Number

If you frequent using Mr. Number, the free call and text message blocking application then you’ll want to make sure you grab the latest update available as it adds some pretty neat features to the service as a whole.

The latest version of Mr. Number brings status to your calls and texts. You can let your friends know when you’re free for a call, when you prefer text, and when you’re tied up. When you need some time Mr. Number can send all your calls to voicemail; your friends will see that you’re out of action and not waste their time. Mr. Number can even let them know when you’re available again.

In order for the status feature to work though, you’ll have to use it and others looking for your attention will also have to use it. But if you’ve installed Mr. Number you’ve no doubt suggested to others to use which makes the new feature a great addition to the app as a whole. You can grab Mr. Number now for free from BlackBerry App World.

QR Clock: The coolest app you’ll see all day that does nothing.

QR Clock - Do you know what time it is?

To put it in the developer’s own words, “[QR Clock] really has no purpose unless you’ve got a sense of humor.” The application simply displays the current date on the right and an ever-changing QR code that displays the time in seconds. It really only serves to be a difficult to use clock – whipping out your BlackBerry, opening App World, and scanning a bar code is a bit far to go just to find the time – for geeky people who like weird clocks (e.g., me).

So why are we even blogging about this app? Take a look at this iPad app in the iTunes App Store. Now, take a look at this application in the Android Market. Finally, one more in BlackBerry App World. Notice a theme? Those aren’t just similar applications. They’re the same app. Quite possibly, QR Clock is the first application built from a single project to be deployed to all three of these app stores.

According to Adobe, Flash CS5.5 allows users to “[d]evelop content once and deploy to virtually any device or operating system…” QR Clock was written to test just that. With a single project file, the developers were able to submit and gain approval for the same program into three different environments. “Apple was obviously the biggest surprise for me here – they approved and posted the app in their store within a week,” says Dream Injector Developer David Pascual.

Application development can be an expensive and time-consuming operation. To make things worth their while, developers have to go to where the money is. Right now, the money is firmly in Apple’s hand. With designer and developer’s tools like Adobe’s Creative Suite 5.5, creators don’t have to make a choice. Write it once, deploy it almost anywhere. App development just got a bit more cost-effective.

Stream your favorite mixtapes on the go with DatPiff Mobile for BlackBerry

DatPiff Mobile

Music has always been a huge part of my life, and with an ever changing taste, and constant changes in musical taste I have found that mixtapes have become a personal favorite for myself. For me downloading and syncing music to my mobile device has never been something that I was interested in as I always forget to keep it up to date with the latest stuff I have downloaded, but those days are no more. DatPiff Mobile is a great application for users which allows you to stream mixtapes on the go, watch music videos from the site, as well as rate, search and favorite mixtapes for easy finding on the computer. Unfortunately the application is not compatible with the BlackBerry Torch, (though if you download the Storm version from their site it will work) and they are still in the process of developing their BlackBerry PlayBook version, but if you have a non-touch screen device, be sure to head to AppWorld and download your copy for free today!

Lock BlackBerry Messenger – Password Protect your BBMs

Lock BlackBerry Messenger

When it comes to my device I can be pretty careless. I’m constantly losing it at home or misplacing it at work. Normally there’s nothing on there that would come back to haunt me as I’m a pretty boring person. However, my BBM’s are a different story. That’s where Lock BlackBerry Messenger by Ajani InfoTech comes into play. It keeps your BBM messages secure without locking the rest of your device down. This way you still have access to other applications such as such as your phone, internet, apps, and email.

This is a pretty good app when it comes to your personal privacy and security. Plus it’s very easy to use. Simply enter in your new password and choose whether to enable / disable the lock. Anytime you click on your BBM icon or access via the app switcher you’re prompted to enter in your password. It even pops up when entering and exiting BBM Groups which in my case is a good thing.

I did notice that it does not prevent BBM access from the messages application and doesn’t time out if you’re chatting and put your device down. These little hiccups aside if you would like to keep your BBM’s hidden from unwanted eyes then this is the app for you.

Features Include:

  • Password protect BlackBerry Messenger app.
  • Quickly switch between Lock and Unlock mode.
  • Neat and clean graphics. Appealing to eyes.
  • Passwords must be 4 characters or greater

Lock BlackBerry Messenger: Password Protect BlackBerry Messenger is available for $1.99 for all devices running OS 4.2 and higher. For a limited time it’s on sale for $0.99. You can’t go wrong with that.
