AT&T to soon begin revoking unlimited data from jailbreak hotspot users

AT&T confirmed to BGR that it will soon begin revoking unlimited data plans from jailbroken iPhone users and other smartphone users who utilize unauthorized tethering and mobile hotspot solutions. Following reports from earlier this year, AT&T on Thursday confirmed that it will remove grandfathered unlimited data plans from accounts belonging to users who tether or use unsanctioned mobile hotspot apps without a tethering plan, which is expressly prohibited by AT&T according to its terms and conditions. “Earlier this year, we began sending letters, emails, and text messages to a small number of smartphone customers who use their devices for tethering but aren’t on our required tethering plan. Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers,” an AT&T spokesperson told BGR via email. The letter outlines three choices for customers who had been making use of unauthorized tethering solutions, one of which is “Do nothing and we’ll go ahead and add the tethering plan on their behalf — after the dated noted in their customer notification.” According to earlier reports, offending users will automatically be bumped to AT&T’s more recent tiered data plan, which affords 2GB of smartphone data and 2GB of tethering data for $45 each month compared to AT&T’s old unlimited smartphone data plan, which costs $30 each month but does not include tethering. A new report from 9to5 Mac claims that users will begin losing unlimited plans as soon as August 11th, but AT&T stated that the policy enforcement date varies depending on when the offending subscriber was sent the notification letter. AT&T’s full statement follows below.

Earlier this year, we began sending letters, emails, and text messages to a small number of smartphone customers who use their devices for tethering but aren’t on our required tethering plan. Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers. (This impacts a only small percentage of our smartphone customer base.)

The letters outline three choices:

  1. Stop tethering and keep their current plan (including grandfathered unlimited plan)
  2. Proactively call AT&T or visit our stores and move to the required tethering plan
  3. Do nothing and we’ll go ahead and add the tethering plan on their behalf — after the dated noted in their customer notification

AT&T may start throttling data speeds in October

AT&T will begin to throttle data speeds during the first week of October, 9to5 Mac reported on Thursday. The carrier could move to throttle the data speeds of its biggest data users in an effort to ensure network stability for its first LTE devices, which are expected to launch later this year. It remains unclear how low AT&T will knock the throughput down to, but 9to5 Mac says Virgin currently forces data hogs down to 256Kbps until the next billing cycle after they use more than 2.5GB. T-Mobile also throttles its data speeds after users go over their monthly 5GB “unlimited” cap. The move should actually be beneficial for most AT&T customers looking for stable performance and will only affect those who use much more data than the average customer according to the report.

What the Android App Player means for BlackBerry

Multiple porting options coming soon

Two nights ago, I installed the leaked Android App Player on to my BlackBerry PlayBook. It was an arduous process that involved several hours of researching, finding bad or poorly worded instructions, and downloading hundreds of megabytes worth of SDK’s (note the plural) and a JRE and a JDK and this and that. That’s a lot of work to install a resource-hogging, semi-functional application. Nevertheless I am amazed.

I am amazed, not necessarily at the application itself, but the ideas it represents. The first is the more apparent of the two. The Android App Player doesn’t just emulate or represent the Android operating system. It is the Android operating system. Android exists as a virtual machine on the PlayBook tablet. Most people don’t run virtual machines on their home computers, let alone a “mere” tablet.

Workaround for WiFi file sharing on the BlackBerry PlayBook

WiFi File Sharing

The latest update for the BlackBerry PlayBook brought us performance updates and fun new features, like pinch-to-zoom video. The update has also caused a small problem: WiFi file sharing is not working. After enabling the WiFi file sharing feature on the PlayBook, a person would normally find the name of the PlayBook in a list of networked devices. Indeed even now, that name should be in the list. However connecting to that named device is causing problems.

Never fear; There’s a quick and easy workaround to this problem. Oddly enough, this is the preferred method of connecting, described in this BlackBerry Knowledge Base article. First, you’ll need the IP address of your PlayBook. Open the PlayBook’s settings by tapping the Gear icon in the upper right of the Status Ribbon. Select the About tab, and then select Network from the drop-down menu. You want the IPv4 address, which will probably be something like 192.168.x.x

  • Windows XP. Use the Windows Key-R combination to open the run menu. Type \192.xxx.x.x That’s backslash-backslash your-playbooks-ip For example, I would type \192.168.1.2
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7: Same thing, but you can also type that in the bar at the bottom of the Start menu
  • Mac: “[S]elect Go -> Connect to Server… and type smb://127.1.1.1 (where 127.1.1.1 should be replaced with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry PlayBook)”

Chances are, this bug will be fixed quite shortly, rendering this article moot. In the meantime, it’s quite easy to get back up and running with the PlayBook’s WiFi File sharing.

Following up the user guide and release notes post for version 6.1 of the BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC, RIM also updated the user guide and release notes for the latest update to the Mac version. This version of the Desktop Software for Mac doesn’t include as many changes as the PC version but there are still a good few. As with the PC version’s docs, I’ve gone ahead and included both the updated user guide and release notes for version 2.1 of the Desktop Software for Mac below.
