Quick Tip: How to change the default email and calendar on your BlackBerry

Default Services

When I switched devices last week I realized something was wrong when I composed emails or added entries to my calendar. It was using my @blackberry.net address instead of my gmail one. It completely slipped my mind that because I have multiple email accounts my device automatically chose one to be the default for both of those applications upon activation. Now I don’t know about you but I don’t think my BBM Groups would like to know when my next dental appointment is. Rather than manually switching accounts from the Send Using option just follow these quick and painless steps to alter this setting.

How to change the default view on the native BlackBerry Calendar app

Beginners BlackBerry Tip: Changing the default Calendar View

Calendar Options  Calendar Options

Options Galore on the BlackBerry OS: One of the GREAT things about the traditional BlackBerry operating system is that it is FULL of options that allow you to customize your device experience. That benefit is also one of the BAD things about the OS. There are options everywhere, and if you don’t know where to look for them or think to look for them, you may find yourself not taking advantage of them. While opening the main Options “wrench” on the homescreen does provide a ton of device options, you’ll also find the Options link on the Menu within native apps like the Phone app, Email app and Calendar app that provide more options for those apps. The same goes for third party apps.

BlackBerry Calendar Tip of the Day: By default, the BlackBerry calendar shows you the DAY view. By hitting the Menu Key (the BlackBerry logo key to the left of the trackpad), and selecting View, you can then toggle between Day, Month and Agenda views. If you find yourself using views like Month and Agenda more than the Day view, you can easily change the default view from within the Calendar app by going to Menu > Options > Calendar Display and Actions and changing the default under the Views > Initial View option as shown in the screen cap at the top of this post.

There you have it. A simple tip, but a handy one for new to BlackBerry users and even old BlackBerry users (like myself) who get lazy and forget all the power that’s at their fingertips.

How to change the default search engine in BlackBerry 7

BlackBerry OS 7 Default Search Engine BlackBerry OS 7 Default Search Engine

If you just picked up a new BlackBerry Bold 9930, you may be upset when you see that Verizon has made Bing the default search engine once again. Well don’t fret — unlike previous OS versions you can now easily make any search you want the default in the BlackBerry browser. To do so, follow these few simple steps.

  1. In the Browser, press the Menu key then choose Options
  2. Select Manage Search Engines
  3. Select New Search Engine
  4. In the Name field enter Google (or your search name of choice)
  5. In the Address field enter http://www.google.com/m/search?q=%s
  6. Save

Now click the new search to set it as the default and you’re done. When you enter a search term in the navigation bar it will use Google (or whatever search you specified as the default) and you’re all set! Thanks to everyone that sent this in!
