NHCBBA TIP: Sometimes it is best to set your 3G BlackBerry Smartphone to 2G (EDGE) only

Edge is Better!

One of the features of your 3G BlackBerry Smartphone that is easy to forget but can come in really handy given certain circumstances is the ability to change your Network Mode. When you go to Mobile Network Options, under Network Mode you have the options of 3G, 2G and 3G & 2G, with the 3G & 2G option being the one that is typically selected by default. This default option means that if 3G is available for the cellular network you’re connected to you will default to 3G, but if the 3G signal gets too weak or you move out of 3G network range, you’ll automatically drop to a 2G network (known as EDGE) which is more than likely to be present. Compared to 2G, 3G connections offer faster data speeds and simultaneous voice and data (on GSM), so most people prefer 3G to 2G when given the option. Thus, the default setting of 3G & 2G works pretty well for most people, most of the time. However, it can make sense to try changing up this option is if you find yourself in a location where all of a sudden your trusty BlackBerry seems to start working like crap even though you’re clearly connected to 3G – it could be that your device would be better off dropping down to 2G but for whatever mystical reason it doesn’t want to downshift. Allow me to illustrate with a real life example from this past weekend:

I spent the weekend getting some R&R at a buddy’s cabin in a cottage/camping area called Spruce Sands, which is a 15 minute drive away from the town of Gimli on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. Gimli recently got its network upgraded to offer 3G (yay…finally!). Back at my buddy’s cabin, all of the devices present (a Bold 9780, Torch 9800, Bold 9700 and an iPhone 4) were clearly connected to Rogers and the 3G signal looked strong, displaying full bars. So based on appearances, it seemed like Gimli’s new 3G network reached outside of town to the area where I was staying. I wasn’t paying super close attention to my phone nor using it that much during the day (getting some R&R, remember?), but my Bold 9780 did seem a bit wonky. My battery was almost dead (despite barely using the phone), I had some undelivered BBMs, and it seemed to take everybody in the cabin a few tries to make voice calls. The service felt suspect, but since I was seeing full bars on 3G (and was having a good time drinking), I didn’t think to do anything about it.

By mid-afternoon of day two after hearing others in the cabin complain about the same issues I noticed the day before, I finally decided to do something about it, and changed my Network Mode to 2G. Boom. Issues Fixed. By switching to EDGE only mode and ignoring 3G connectivity, every issue we experienced went away and our devices were back to running normal (with exceptional battery life I might add on EDGE). Apparently we were picking up the town’s 3G tower still but were near the limit of its range, which meant we were ignoring the much closer towers that offered EDGE only. And that really horrible battery life was the result of the radios working excessively hard to try an maintain that 3G connection when we were clearly getting out or range.

Long Story Short: If you find your 3G data connectivity appears to be ok but all of a sudden you’re experiencing poor battery life, undelivered BBMs, delayed SMS messages and calls dropping, try switching to 2G only. It might save you from a ton of aggrevation!

LoudTalks Releases Free Beta Push To Talk App for BlackBerry

LoudTalks LoudTalks2

Over the years there have been quite a few push to talk BlackBerry solutions with even RIM/carriers joining in though none have really caught on. Luis let me know about the latest to join the fray called LoudTalk which recently released (May 19th) a beta push to talk application for BlackBerry. The app actually works nicely and doesn’t use a ton of data and there is a PC client if you want to try it out. It also works on all OS 4.5+ devices which is a perk.

Features include:

  • GPRS / EDGE / 3G or WiFi
  • Touchscreen-friendly
  • Real-time, low latency
  • Public channels

Check out the beta at loudtalks.com/bb and let us know what you think!

BlackBerry Torch 2 gets previewed yet again, still not official

I’m sure this will come as no surprise to anyone out there but the still unofficial, unannounced BlackBerry Torch 2 has one again received some hands-on love. At this point, there is very little information remaining to be said about the BlackBerry Torch 2.

BlackBerry Torch 2 poses for the camera yet again

BlackBerry Torch 2

We haven’t seen much of the upcoming BlackBerry Torch 2 in the last few weeks, but the guys at TechnoBuffalo tossed up a few images in case you’re in withdrawal. Nothing really new here from these shots, but we do get to see more of my least favorite battery door to date (I think it looks Bedazzled!). Also we can tell from the icons that this guy is running OS 7 as expected. A quick recap of the BlackBerry Torch 2 specs:

Rumor: T-Mobile Rolling Out Their Own Tiered Data Plans?

T-Mobile Teired data

While AT&T and Verizon have rolled out their useless tiered data plans we are now seeing T-Mobile following in their own way. T-Mobile already limits “Unlimited” plans to EDGE speeds once you use over 5GB a month which is nicer than other carriers that charge you overages. According to the trusty TmoNews T-Mobile is working on both sides of the 5GB spectrum with some new smartphone data plans in the following style:

  • $10 for 200MB
  • $20 for 2GB
  • $30 for 5GB
  • $60 for 10GB

The interesting thing is that, unlike AT&T and Verizon, T-Mobile will simply drop you down to 2G speeds if you cross your data usage bucket. 2G speeds kind of suck but at least you won’t be charged an arm and a leg in overages. According to TmoNews these plans will start rolling out on May 22nd. I would be hard pressed to imagine a BlackBerry using up to 10 gigs but maybe once RIM rolls out the new OS 7 devices with the mobile hotspot feature if T-Mobile does not tag on another “tethering fee.”

BlackBerry Torch 2

Adding to the hands-on photos of the upcoming BlackBerry Bold Touch and the BlackBerry Touch (monaco) we’ve seen, we now have some new photos of the BlackBerry Torch 2 to add to the mix. The design is nearly identical to that of the BlackBerry Torch and again, you could say that this is really what the original Torch should have been. It has nearly twice the CPU power of it’s older sibling and is running OS 6.1. For more on all the devices we should be seeing this year, check out our 011 BlackBerry Smartphone Roadmap.

BlackBerry Torch 2 Key Specs:

  • Processor: 1.2 GHz processor

  • Connectivity: WiFi + Bluetooth + NFC

Video of the BlackBerry Storm3 Aka the BlackBerry Monaco

The BlackBerry Storm3 looks pretty awesome, in fact, it looks like what the first and second Storm devices should have been. It looks like RIM has canceled SurePress too, which is great because a touchscreen device doesn’t really need it.

The BlackBerry Monaco is going to be coming out on Verizon, and considering the iPhone 4 is now out on Verizon, RIM has some incredible competition for touchscreen customers. Many previous BlackBerry owners will move to the Storm3 because they may want to keep BBM or some of their favorite BlackBerry apps, but RIM needs to work on the value prop for the Storm3 versus the iPhone 4. Specs after the jump.
