Backing up 3rd party applications on your BlackBerry

Backing Up 3rd Party Apps

Now that we’ve learned to backup and restore device data using Desktop Manager 6, it’s time to review how quick and simple it is to do the same thing with third-party applications. No matter what the reason, this will save you the hassle of downloading everything all over again. However, when upgrading to an entirely new OS (i.e. OS4 to OS5, OS5 to OS6) you will need to check on compatibility. Keep reading for the full steps on backing up your 3rd party applications.

Backup

First, load the desktop software and connect your device with the USB cable. For those that don’t have the latest version you can download here. At the upper left corner click on Device and scroll down to Switch Devices. In the box that appears click on the icon of your phone.

Backing Up Apps

Next, you will be asked to select which data you would like to backup. Remove the checkmark next to device data and make sure that third-party applications is selected and click on Next. This will start the process of retrieving the application information off your device.

Backing Up Apps

Technically, we are using the device switch wizard to backup application data as it is not built into DM6. Therefore, when you see the above screen asking you to connect your new device, click on Cancel.

The important thing to remember is this: Do not exit out of Desktop Manager. The backup files are in a temp folder named for your pin # that will be erased if the program is closed. In order to prevent this, you will need to move the folder to another location while DM is still running. You can search for the folder a few different ways depending on your system. Windows XP users can click on Start Menu > Search and type in your pin number or go to Start > Run and type in %temp%. This will automatically load your temp directory where you can see the yellow folder. Windows Vista/7 users can type %temp% into the search bar by clicking on the Windows Button in the lower left hand corner or can locate the pin folder by following this path: C:Users[name]AppDataLocalTemp.

Backing Up Apps

When you have located the file with your pin #, copy and paste it from the temp directory and place it on your desktop for easy access or in a designated backup file you have created. All of your application modules are now safe and sound on your computer.

Restore

When you load DM6, click on Applications from the menu on the left. After it scans and detects your device, click on Import files on the upper right. By default the explorer box will go to your documents directory. Browse through your hard drive to find where you have placed the backup folder. In this folder you will find and select the .alx file (pin #) and click Open. The applications to be added/restored are then loaded into the desktop manager and appear at the bottom under application summary and coded as Install.

To complete the process simply click on Apply at the lower right hand corner of the program.

When complete, Desktop Manager will default back to the applications screen and scan your phone again. Some applications might require a reboot to finish the process. Do not remove your phone until it has rebooted and is recognized by DM. Finally, you can safely unplug your device and be happy knowing all your apps are backed up

iOS vs. Android: Which mobile OS is more secure?

A new independent study by security experts at Symantec attempted to measure how secure Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platform are, and also to determine how these mobile platforms stack up against desktop operating systems. Symantec claims that these mobile platforms are much more secure than today’s popular desktop operating systems, though the firm does note that the key variable, as always, is the human element. “Today’s mobile devices are a mixed bag when it comes to security,” said Carey Nachenberg, Symantec Fellow and Chief Architect, in a statement. “While more secure than traditional PCs, these platforms are still vulnerable to many traditional attacks. Moreover, enterprise employees are increasingly using unmanaged, personal devices to access sensitive enterprise resources, and then connecting these devices to 3rd-party services outside of the governance of the enterprise, potentially exposing key assets to attackers.” While Symantec neglects to reach a firm conclusion regarding which mobile OS is the most secure, the firm definitely seems to favor iOS more often than not. It says iOS’ app screening procedure plays a big role in the operating system’s security, and it also says the platform’s architecture makes it better at resisting malware attacks and data integrity attacks. It also says iOS offers better encryption and more secure access control for apps. Symantec’s full press release follows below.

App World Gets Website Redesign with 3.0 Approaching

app world redesignApp World 3.0 is about to go live and it looks like RIM has updated the desktop App World site. App World 3.0 doesn’t seem to have anything all that new from the consumer side, but does help developers with larger image submissions (for PlayBook), as well as other description changes in the vendor portal. The desktop redesign is really awesome though and has a more “zen” feel to it. As you can see from the screenshot, or heading there yourself, the site has a featured carousel as well as smaller carousels with the Top Free, Top Paid and Newest items. Perhaps the homescreen of the app version of App World should be designed this way too.

Review: Carbonite for BlackBerry smartphones

Carbonite

Carbonite Inc has been around since 2005. The company provides a nearly effortless way to back up and restore data on your computer. In fact, their motto is simply “Back it up. Get it back”. The days of not backing up your personal data are over, and have been for quite some time, so why aren’t you? There are many different options to consider; Carbonite is one to definitely look at. As far as security goes, they use 128-bit Blowfish encryption to keep everything locked down tight. They can handle all user generated files, no matter if you are looking at backing up a few documents, 200 GB of music or more.

As far as BlackBerry goes, they’ve added a few updates to their Carbonite application not too long ago. Through the Carbonite app, you can browse through, download and email practically any file you have backed up from your PC to your account. Is this the type of access you are looking for? Let’s take a peek.

Notifier Sends BlackBerry Notifications to Your PC or Mac over Wi-Fi

Notifier Notifier2

Notifier is an interesting new app to hit App World. The concept of the app is that it sends notifications from your BlackBerry to your PC or Mac from your BlackBerry over Wi-Fi. While there have been apps that do this in the past I am kind of digging the notifications on this one and the use of Wi-Fi. Right now it seems to only do notifications for phone calls, SMS, and battery alerts but hopefully more will come soon with email and the ability to view the email.

There is a desktop and BlackBerry app that work together to make the magic work and for $0.99 it is a pretty cool app.

Check out Notifier in App World at this link.[qrcode pix=170]https://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/45823[/qrcode]
