RIM Updates BlackBerry News App to v1.1 – OS 7.0 Only?

I am not sure what to make of this one so let us know if you figure out more info. Tim let me know that RIM has announced BlackBerry News App v1.1 in their official forums. The thing is nobody has spotted the app in App World yet though that has not stopped RIM from changing the description to reflect v1.1 and putting up knowledge base articles about it. My current theory is that this new version is only available for OS 7.0 devices in App World though this version simply brings it to closer parity with what Viigo use to have before RIM acquired it.

The new version 1.1 of BlackBerry News adds:

  • Language support for English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese
  • Unified Search for BlackBerry News articles on the device
  • All New items folder view
  • Google Reader Import
  • BlackBerry ID for OS 7.0 support

RIM Anounces BlackBerry News For the PlayBook v1.0

RIM today launched BlackBerry News for the BlackBerry PlayBook v1.0.

The application is now available through app world at this LINK

Full press release and app description below:

Today RIM is announcing the BlackBerry News 1.0 app for BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet.

BlackBerry News allows a user to consolidate and access all of their subscription-based (RSS) content feeds within one app on the BlackBerry PlayBook. New feeds can be easily added by browsing the content library, or searching for specific keywords or URLs.

The app also comes with pre-populated feeds from top news sites providing instant access to popular content from multiple providers on a variety of topics. Categories include: Arts & Entertainment, Business, Health & Lifestyle, News Headlines, Science & the Environment, Technology, and Travel.

The BlackBerry News app for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has been optimized for the tablet screen, and leverages the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s gesture-based navigation including:

  • Touching the “News Library” button feeds to easily find and add new feeds
  • Using the BlackBerry PlayBook bezel drop-down gesture from the “My News” home screen pulls up the options menu to update content, or edit and delete any subscriptions
  • Selecting a subscription provides an abbreviated summary view of articles within that  news feed, allowing for quick scanning of content
  • Swiping left on the tablet screen turns the page

The BlackBerry News Feed application for BlackBerry smartphones was introduced by RIM last year, and customers that use the BlackBerry news feed apps on both their BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry smartphone will have their subscriptions automatically brought over and synced up between their devices based on their BlackBerry ID.

This application is currently available in the US and Canada, and will be available in other countries later this year.

RIM’s BlackBerry Device Roadmap for 2010?

I am not sure what information RBC analyst Mike Abramsky was using to develop this road-map put out by Business Insider but the info looks in line with what we currently know. He marks the Bold (Torch?) 9800 slider coming out for AT&T in Aug 2010 which is a bit later than the July-ish release date we were hearing before. The device will be exclusive to AT&T for 6 months which might add some contention like the Bold 9000 launch. It is also right on schedule with what we have been hearing about the release of OS 6 with the new WebKit browser.

T-Mobile Roadmap Leaked, Lists Nameless BlackBerry

t mobile 2h 2010 roadmap 300x201 T Mobile Roadmap Leaked, Lists Nameless BlackBerry

A T-Mobile roadmap was recently leaked, displaying handsets planned for a future launch. Among the icons captured in the screenshot is a single RIM logo, though no model name to accompany it. With no extra information, it’s difficult to speculate as to which device it may be – some are saying the Pearl 3G, while others think it could be one of the newer devices we’ve seen and heard so much about recently.

We recently saw a video showing off a T-Mobile branded 9300, which recently passed through the FCC successfully. That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising if it was the Pearl 3G 9100.
