BlackBerry Desktop Software For Mac v2.2.0 now available for download in the BlackBerry Beta Zone

BlackBerry Desktop Software For Mac v2.2.0

After years of neglecting their Mac user baser, RIM seems to now be putting a lot more attention into making sure the BlackBerry tools available to Windows users are now also available to Mac users. As such, another update to BlackBerry Desktop Software For Mac is now available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. This updates the currently available v2.1.2 to v2.2.. If you have a BlackBerry Beta Zone account and are signed up for the Desktop Software program you can now login and grab the download. Note however, this version is only available to North American users currently.

Blackberry 101: How to back up and restore BlackBerry smartphone data using BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0

Overview

The following tasks and steps permit the backup and restoration of data to a BlackBerry smartphone that uses BlackBerry® Desktop Software 6.0. It is also possible to schedule automatic backups of BlackBerry® smartphone data when the BlackBerry smartphone is connected to the computer and BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0 is running.

  • To perform a manual backup of your BlackBerry smartphone data
  • To schedule automatic backups of your BlackBerry smartphone data
  • To restore your BlackBerry smartphone data

 

Back up BlackBerry smartphone data

Note: To back up data that is in your on-board device memory, mass storage mode must be turned on. For more information on mass storage mode, see the user guide for your BlackBerry smartphone.

  1. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your computer.
  2. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device > Back up.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • To back up all of your device data, click Full backup
    • To back up all of your device data except for email messages, click Quick backup
    • To select which types of device data to back up, click Custom backup. Select the check box next to the data you want to back up
  4. If you want to back up data that is stored in the on-board device memory of your BlackBerry smartphone, select the Files saved on my built-in media storage check box.
  5. Do any of the following:
    • To change the default name for the backup file, in the File name field, type a new name
    • To encrypt your data, click Encrypt backup file. Type a password
    • To save your settings so that you are not prompted to set these options again when you back up your BlackBerry smartphone, select the Don’t ask for these settings again check box
  6. Click Back up.

Scheduling automatic backups

You can also enable automatic backups of the data on your BlackBerry smartphone when it is connected to your computer. To do this, complete the following steps:

  1. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your computer.
  2. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device > Device options.
  3. On the General tab, in the When I connect my devicesection, do any of the following:
    • To back up data and settings on the BlackBerry smartphone, select the Back up my device check box. In the drop-down list, click how often you want to back up your device data and settings
    • To synchronize your calendar entries, contacts, memos, and tasks, select the Organizer data check box
    • To synchronize your songs, pictures, and videos, select the Media files check box
    • To keep the date and time on your BlackBerry smartphone synchronized with the date and time on your computer, select the My computer’s date and time with my device check box
  4. Click OK.

Restoring BlackBerry smartphone data

To restore data that is in your on-board device memory, mass storage mode must be turned on.

Note: All files that are stored on your BlackBerry smartphone are deleted before the backup file is restored.

  1. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your computer.
  2. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device > Restore.
  3. Select a backup file that contains the data you want to restore.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • To restore all data to your BlackBerry smartphone, click Full restore
    • To select the data that you want to restore, click Custom restore. Select the check box beside the data type that you want to restore
    • If your BlackBerry smartphone includes built-in media storage, and you want restore it, select the Files saved on my built-in media storage check box
  5. If the backup file is encrypted, type the password that you set to encrypt.
  6. Click Restore

Updated: BlackBerry Desktop Software For Mac Version 2.1 Official User Guide & Release Notes

Following up the user guide and release notes post for version 6.1 of the BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC, RIM also updated the user guide and release notes for the latest update to the Mac version. The biggest feature addition for version 2.1 of the Desktop Software for Mac is support for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Here’s the changelog:

  • Tablet Support – Sync and import your media files with the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.
  • General – Provides fixes and improvements to the features.

This version of the Desktop Software for Mac doesn’t include as many changes as the PC version but there are still a good few. As with the PC version’s docs, I’ve gone ahead and included both the updated user guide and release notes for version 2.1 of the Desktop Software for Mac below.

Updated: BlackBerry Desktop Software For PC Version 6.1 Official User Guide & Release Notes

Early last month RIM updated the BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC to version 6.1 but didn’t immediately post an updated user guide. I’m not sure when they updated the docs but a new version of both the user guide and release notes are now available. Here are the new features and enhancements in v6.1 of the Desktop Software:

  • Certificates – If your smartphone is associated with a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, you can download, import, and synchronize certificates between your computer and your smartphone.
  • Files – You can use the Files feature to copy files between your smartphone or tablet and your computer.
  • Media – files You can now synchronize and import encrypted media files.
  • Wi-Fi® music sync – You can use Wi-Fi music sync without launching the Desktop Software.

BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac v2.1 now available!

Desktop Manager for Mac Updated

Good news today for BlackBerry + Mac users, especially those of you who own a BlackBerry PlayBook and Mac. RIM has officially released  BlackBerry Desktop Software v2.1 for Mac which now supports the RIM tablet. Here’s the word from RIM:

BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac v2.1 includes media sync support for the BlackBerry PlayBook. In addition to being able to drag and drop files directly to BlackBerry PlayBook over USB or Wi-Fi, you can now use Desktop Software for Mac to sync music, photos and videos with iTunes and iPhoto over USB. A new BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac update has just hit the BlackBerry Beta Zone for those of you who may have had issues with the previous build that was made available. At this time, RIM hasn’t posted up the release notes for viewing the changes but if we had to guess — it has some BlackBerry PlayBook changes in it as well support for BlackBerry 7 devices. If you’re a beta zone member, the update is available now. If you’re not a beta zone member, there is alternative link available below.

How to: Install Official BlackBerry Software Updates Using a Mac

Back a year or two ago, BlackBerry and Apple computers didn’t play so nice. But since the launch of the official BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, RIM has made it quite simple to manage your BlackBerry, including backup/restore, iTunes Sync, add/remove apps, and software updates. RIM has posted a quick walk through of how to update your BlackBerry with an official release using BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac. The guide has pictures and all, it’s pretty handy guide for those with a Mac and stuck on older software.

Here’s the steps if you don’t want pictures:

1. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your Mac computer via USB.
2. On your Mac computer, in the Applications folder, click BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
3. Click on Backup at the top of BlackBerry Desktop Software and follow the instructions. This will insure that all of your data is backed up prior to proceeding with the update.
4. Click the Applications icon at the top of the screen.
5. In the list of available applications, select the check box beside one or more applications.
6. Click Start.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac

It’s been a while since we’ve seen an update for BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, and while it’s been in the Beta Zone for a few weeks, RIM has made it officially available today. The updates include support for OS 6 devices, ability to switch devices, media sync and Wifi music sync. While it still misses a few of the features of it’s PC counterpart, Mac users should be happy with the upgrades. Grab it from the link below.

How to update your BlackBerry device software using BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0

By now, you might have read my previous post about updating your BlackBerry® Device Software wirelessly and are wondering how to update your software using BlackBerry® Desktop Software. Well, you’re in luck, because that’s what we’ll be going through today!

The first step, if you don’t already have it installed (or if you don’t have the most up-to-date version), is to download BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0, which is available here. Once the file has been downloaded, double-click it to start the installation. Simply follow the prompts to install it and allow it to run once it has finished installing.
