Leaked: BlackBerry Desktop Manager 7 Beta - no keycode required!

A new beta version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager appeared in the BlackBerry Beta Zone a while ago, and while it required a keycode in order to make use of it — some folks didn’t really feel as though the application should be restricted. As such, OpenSourceBB members have gone ahead and released version with the keycode requirement stripped out of the app. Now, everyone who wishes to try out the BlackBerry Desktop Manager 7 Beta can do so. Remeber that beta tag though folks, expect some bugs.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac updated in Beta Zone – Brings BlackBerry PlayBook media import and sync

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Mac

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac has been waiting on some BlackBerry PlayBook functionality for a while now, so we were glad to see the latest beta release show up in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. The new version is at 2.1.0 (build 19) and includes some support for the BlackBerry PlayBook (yes only some). When connecting the PlayBook you now have options for both importing and syncing media from your Mac. This includes music, movies and photos but that’s it. Sadly no sign of backup/restore or any other new features, but I suppose it’s a step in the right direction. We’re not sure if this is a wide roll-out or only certain users are seeing it, so if you’re a Beta Zone member login and let us know if it’s popping up for you. Also no word on an official public release but we’ll keep you posted.

Desktop Manager for Mac Support for BlackBerry PlayBook coming this summer

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC... just need it for Mac now
Desktop Manager for PC (pictured) supports the PlayBook… Mac support coming this summer

One of the questions that has been popping up a lot in our friends BlackBerry PlayBook Forum site is in regards to BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac support. As it stands now, if you have Desktop Manager for Mac installed and plug in your PlayBook, nothing happens. It doesn’t recognize the device. The reason for this of course, is that DM for Mac currently doesn’t support it. We reached out to RIM for an estimated timeline on when Desktop Manager for Mac will get PlayBook support, and were told:

Desktop Manager for Mac will be available this summer.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Mac users are left high and dry. Upon connecting a PlayBook to a Mac via microUSB cable for the first time, you’ll be prompted to install drivers onto your Mac. Once installed, your PlayBook will appear as a network drive and you can easily drag and drop to transfer your pictures, movies, documents and other files onto the PlayBook. You can even transfer files via WiFi. So you can survive without worries without Desktop Manager, but for those of you waiting on Desktop Manager for Mac support, you now have a better idea of when it’s coming.

Blackberry OS 101: How-To Re-Install OS when computer wont recognize device

  1. -Disconnect the BlackBerry device from the computer.
  2. -In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, open Application Loader and click Next.
  3. -Perform a hard reset on the BlackBerry device. (Battery Pull)
  4. -Reconnect the BlackBerry device to the computer before the BlackBerry device finishes resetting, and complete one of the following steps:
  5. -For BlackBerry devices with a USB connection, wait until the drop-down list on the Communication Port Selection window changes to USB PIN and click Next.
  6. -For BlackBerry devices with a serial connection, click Next on the Communication Port Selection window.
  7. -If the Handheld Password Required dialog box appears, type your password. The Application Loader will detect the BlackBerry device.

Note: If these steps do not complete successfully the first time, the BlackBerry device might have finished resetting before the Application Loader could connect to the BlackBerry device.
