The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics

PI

Our world – the world you can see, the world you can touch – is governed by gravity. Just as the mass of the sun holds tightly to the eight planets of our solar system, it is the enormous mass of the earth, 6 septillion (6*1024) kilograms, that keeps you from flying off into space. Yet in the subatomic world of the very small, gravity appears nonexistent. Einstein’s world of spacetime and the subatomic realm of Neils Bohr and Werner Heisenberg follow different laws, and yet they both exist and create the world we live it. One of the missions of the Perimeter Institute is to study and unify that divide.

In 2000, Mike Lazaridis’ love of science and learning would lead him to create an institution whose mandate was to simply think. Think about the possibilities in explaining the world around us. The founder and Co-CEO of Research In Motion, founded the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics with a personal donation of $100 million. Mike L. wasn’t the only RIM investor; he convinced Doug Fregin and Jim Balsillie each donated $10 million from their own pockets. In 2008, Mike L. donated a further $50 million to PI.

In 2004, the center for learning opened near the campus of the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The Perimeter Institute studies some strange things, and the resident scientists and mathematicians struggle with some very difficult concepts each and every day. Though their understanding of higher maths and physics, they are beginning to tackle some truly difficult questions. Featured on the BBC’s Horizon, several researchers presented credible theories on what they believe may have existed before the big bang.

Waterloo, Ontario, Canada is Research In Motion’s home. RIM began at the University of Waterloo; the company’s buildings sit right off the main campus. More than that, RIM has made Waterloo its home. Through generous donations from its employees, RIM has invested in the city. Jim Basillie donated $20 million to create the Centre for International Governance Innovation with the help of an additional $10 from Mike L.  Even less glamorous donations nevertheless benefit the city. Recently, RIM’s donation to the The Food Bank of Waterloo Region allowed them to purchase a new refigerated truck. This was in addition to the company’s annual food donation drive.

RIM has helped to turn Waterloo into a center for research and development. That in turn puts RIM in the heart of the latest and greatest in scientific achievement. And that’s right where they should be, at the forefront of technology.

Funny Video: BBC One’s The One Ronnie In “My Blackberry Is Not Working!”

As a member of the NY Tech Meetup message boards I receive a bunch of emails from members about different tech stories, questions and comments. Members also share casual content they think others would enjoy, like this one sent out by Eddie which included a witty, funny video called “My BlackBerry Is Not Working!”.

The video stars Ronnie Corbett and Harry Enfield and is part of BBC One’s The One Ronnie program. In the video Ronnie is the patron of a grocery store where he goes to complain that his BlackBerry is not working. What makes this video witty and funny is that they use the blackberry fruit instead of the smartphone. The dialog is clever and will definitely be understood by any BlackBerry smartphone user.

I know I got a good laugh out of this video but check it out for yourself below and let me know what you think!

FilmOn Live TV – Free Mobile WiFi Streaming Of International News Channels & More!

FilmOn Live TV Free Mobile WiFi Streaming Of International News Channels & More!

Edwin let me know about a website he came across called FilmOn. At first glance this website only seems available for desktop computers, iPads and Droid devices but a quick visit with the BlackBerry Browser presents you with a mobile-optimized website. The mobile site allows you to stream live TV using your BlackBerry’s WiFi connection and includes channels like CBS LA, KTTV Fox, Ion Life, NBC HD, Sky News, BBC News, CNN International and more.

Most of the channels available in the United States seem to be West coast based but there are international channels with a focus on specific countries like Spain, Russia and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. I have to mention that FilmOn does offer certain explicit channels that are extremely NSFW and should only be viewed if you’re 18 years of age or whatever the age requirement is for your locale. These explicit channels should be viewed at your own risk, NHCBBA.com, bb.nhcbb.com or nhcbb.com is not responsible for your actions.

That being said, if you want to check it out go to filmon.com from your BlackBerry browser to be redirected to the mobile website. I’ve confirmed the live streaming to work smoothly on BlackBerry devices running OS 6.0 but do not know how it will work on devices running earlier OS versions. If you decide to check it out be sure to let me know how it works for you in the comments!

Thanks @tmobb4life!

BBC iPlayer for BlackBerry now available in App World

BBC iPlayer

Currently you can watch programmes and radio shows on the BBC iPlayer by going to the iPlayer website from your BlackBerry. Now you have a weblink that allows you to launch the iPlayer website direct from your Home folder. Yes, you read that right, it’s not a dedicated app it’s more of a launcher that takes you to the iPlayer website. It makes it convenient if nothing else. Though I’m not sure if it would be any use to Torch owners as you can put a bookmark shortcuts on the Home screen that would effectively do the same thing. If you want to catch up on any BBC programmes or radio shows from the last 7 days then give it a try. It’s free and is already available from App World. However, do note that it is only available to users in the UK.

HOT! Yesterberry Links – Hundreds of Free TV and Radio Streams

Yesterberry All I can say is WOW! I am not sure how Yesterberry pulled this off but Yeseterberry has put together links for hundreds of free TV and radio streams. I am not talking about no name TV streams. Their mobile website has links to Fox News, Cartoon Network, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, VH1, BBC ONE and TWO, Discovery Channel, and my favorite Mystery Science Theater.

I did not even know there were web streams available for all of these channels but Yesterberry has collected quite a few of them. I was blown away with the selection but it could be I just never looked that hard for streaming video channels. All of the links are user submitted so the catalog has really grown. There are also quite a few streaming radio stations in their catalog for you to choose from.

In other words if you have a unlimited data plan and are into streaming TV and Radio check out www.yesterberry.com from your BlackBerry and hit the TV or Radio menu links. You can read more about the site at this thread on CrackBerry forums. The site is totally free but Yesterberry does accept donations for which they give you a login and extra abilities but free accounts still have access to all the content.
