Global Alert Network v3.0: Informative And Preventive, Available In BlackBerry App World

The last time I had tried GAN on my BlackBerry, I did write a short article about it. What I like about it is that it contains alerts for serious traffic and weather issues, and alerting you as they come. Stay ahead of the game, check it out…

It would be in your best interest to know if there were an upcoming flood or tsunami heading your way, an earthquake, or any sort of major weather catastrophe. And with the Global Alert Network, your BlackBerry can be the ultimate weather and traffic alert system for you. Don’t be caught surprised and unprepared with the upcoming weather issues, be ready and ahead. That’s what the Global Alert System can do for you.

The only con this app does have is that when you contact customer service, you have no support or reply. That was the only downfall I saw. Other than that, I’m really liking that it does what it does. I think it’s extremely crucial for those who live in areas where the weather hasn’t been the best such as tornado alley or the flooding rivers and rain.

You can grab the Global Alert Network free for your BlackBerry from BlackBerry App World. Let us know what you think of it.

Bye bye GPSLogger, say hello to GPSLogger II

A GPS Application for BlackBerry Smartphones

GPSLogger II

2 Years (and 1 week) ago we reviewed the GPSLogger application. Matthias (emacberry.com) originally developed the application in order to record your movement. Speed, elevation, direction, path; almost everything was captured effortlessly. In fact, GPSLogger didn’t just capture current values, but track and graph the values recorded at each interval throughout your trek. It even included a compass mode, import/export GPX and KML files, night mode viewing, and the ability to keep logs of POI along the way.

Now I speak of it in past tense because GPSLogger has been succeeded by GPSLogger II. Completely rewritten, it adds a slew of impressive functionality. Through BBM6 integration, GPSLogger II allows you to share your location (or direction) with your BBM contacts automatically. Now that’s definitely a new way to stay connected through BBM. No need to ask where they are, you’ll be able to tell instantly. Keep in mind that this feature is only available to BBM6 beta testers for now. If you aren’t one of them, you can still enjoy the following new features:

  • Append Logging
  • BlackBerry Maps
  • Additional (multiple) Views
  • Emergency Alerts
  • Sharing Location (email)
  • Configurable Status Bar
  • Additional new Keyboard shortcuts
  • Elevation plausibility check
  • Additional information: The climb in percen and the average speed over the last minute
  • The Distance Alert [GPSLogger: Special Options]

You’ll also be happy to know that, despite all of these new features now available, GPSLogger II is free. Check out the new features in detail after the jump.

BlackBerry Babes: A Nigerian Movie About A Group of Girls Who Love BlackBerry

We’ve written a lot on BlackBerryCool about BlackBerry in Nigeria. We even had a guest post by a Nigerian named Temitope O., who wrote a whole post on BlackBerry in Nigeria…from his BlackBerry. What we didn’t know, is that there is a full length feature film made by Sylvester Obadigie called BlackBerry Girls. The film is a comedy about a group of girls that love their BlackBerry’s and will only date guys that they think can buy them one. The girls are constantly on the hunt for new models and are always BBM’ing each other gossip. Here is a choice quote from the movie:

Keisha dumps her boyfriend Daniel by telling him, “Why can’t you understand that without you buying me a blackberry phone there is no basis for this relationship? Why must I be embarrassed in front of my friends?”

Continuing on the success of BlackBerry Babes, RIM should sponsor a blockbuster-style Nollywood spy movie. The movie would be like Johnny Mnemonic meets Mission Impossible. Secret agencies carry encrypted data that could topple governments, all with the use of their BlackBerrys. Only one man can hack into the RIM NOC in Canada and figure out how to break in. SPOILER ALERT: (he realizes there’s no way to break in and movie ends with him being arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounties).

MDC-KIDTRACKER Child Safety App for BlackBerry

data MDC KIDTRACKER Child Safety App for BlackBerry
After the first week of the month, a new app hit the App World, MDC-Kidtracker Child Safety for BlackBerry. The MDC-KidTracker is a software application that tracks the whereabouts of BlackBerry smartphones and provides up to the minute reporting of current location and recent location data points. within the app you’ll find

  • Distance Alert Notification
  • Speed Alert Notification
  • About Mobile Data

The MDC-KidTracker™ gives parents the ability to know the location of their child’s SmartPhone at any given time, and by extension, the location of that child. We developed the MDC-KidTracker™ so that parents have access to critical information data points to help ensure the safety, and have knowledge of the whereabouts, of their children. As administrators of a child’s phone, parents have the ability to access the MDC Website and set geographic location and movement speed parameters within which their child may move without concern. Should the child go outside of the boundaries or exceed the set speed limit set by the parent, they will automatically be notified that the child’s Smartphone has moved outside of the set parameters. Such notification will take the form of an instant E-mail alert. Parents can then go to the Administration page through the MDC web site to find out the current location as well as direction and speed the child is travelling, if that’s the case.

Global Alert Network warns of traffic and weather alerts – Defenseless against backseat drivers

Global Alert Network

I haaaaate traffic. There’s nothing like driving at a tenth of the speed limit to cause stress. It also causes my mind to wander; what’s the hold up? Accident? Construction? Flooding? No one knows until they’re either stuck in it, or hear from someone who is.

There’s an app that’s been out for a while called the Global Alert Network that promises to provide warning as you near problem areas. This is done by using GPS versus using cell tower location. The application can handle alerts on a national, state/provincial or local level. Separated into Weather and Traffic alerts, Global Alert Network has over 100 distinct alert types to keep you informed of. Being a parent, I can appreciate that this app also provides Amber Alerts to its users. This is the type of app that you don’t think about until an alert comes in. At this point, you hopefully have a few options, or alternative routes, at your disposal. Depending on the situation, it could also potentially save your life. Global Alert Network is available to residents of North America at this point. You’re probably thinking like I am – with a name that contains the word Global, they should expand their operation. The application is free, and you can add additional alert services (such as Local/National Sports alerts and News) on a (free) subscription basis. Global Alert Network is available from BlackBerry App World.

Review: BullGuard Mobile Security 10 For BlackBerry v10.0.233

Do you remember my post on the ZeuS trojan? With the issue of the ZeuS Trojan BlackBerry variant targeting BlackBerry devices, I set out on a mission. My mission was to seek the antivirus/security softwares that are capable of defending your BlackBerry from this and other malware. One such software is BullGuard. Check it out…

I sent out emails inquiring who had the virus definitions for the ZeuS, and the only one who responded was BullGuard. I thought it would be a great idea to do a review on this product and let you see how it works. I didn’t test the antivirus for good reason, but I did show the definitions from BullGuard. BullGuard has had the definitions and able to detect and remove the ZeuS trojan since the end of September 2010! It detects the trojan before it’s installed.

Customer service is fantastic through email. The live chat isn’t as helpful, but through email they are fast to respond and are very precise with answers and assistance. The app itself installs quickly, and with a key you have after purchase, you set it up and you’re ready to go. The nice thing about this app is that you have a dashboard to send commands and view your device.

The BullGuard Mobile Security 10 if you look closely, is very similar to SMobile security Shield, and if you look at the screens, you’ll see Junos Secured. Junos Networks is the company that acquired SMobile Systems. BullGuard includes the following for the device through the app:

  • Antivirus and Antispyware with real time detection and removal of viruses and spyware via direct download, SMS, MMS, e-mail, Bluetooth, and infrared.
  • Antitheft: Look and wipe remotely, track your phone via GPS (I can tell you that when you click on the larger map, it’s very precise).
  • Parental Control: Monitor your child’s calls, text messages, and photos.
  • Firewall
  • Spamlifter: Block calls and messages
  • Basic Backup: Contacts and Calendar
  • Forgetfulness: If you forgot where you placed your phone, you can log in and have the sound alarm so you can find your phone.
  • Support: Free support 24/7
