AT&T and DubMeNow Partner on Education App Platform for Students

Demo of the DubMeNow platform.AT&T has announced a new cross-platform app platform called Campus Guide, which lets students, faculty, alumni and staff access campus information right on their smartphones. Community members can check out upcoming events, catch up on university sports scores and read course materials as well from within the app. The platform is possible due to a partnership with DubMeNow, a company we’ve covered before on NHCBBA. AT&T Campus Guide offers nine different features:

Courses: Students can connect with classmates and professors in real-time using AT&T Campus Guide, viewing grades, assignments, announcements and detailed class information.
Events: Wondering when the next big game is? Not sure when exams start? The events calendar on AT&T Campus Guide provides important dates and times for campus happenings.
Directory: Search and browse contact information and connect with other students and faculty, without paging through a campus phonebook.
Maps: Freshmen, visiting students and alumni will particularly appreciate campus maps and turn-by-turn directions between buildings.
Notifications: Timely notifications announce school cancellations and remind students about overdue library books, tuition payments and more.
News: Find the latest campus news, sports scores and Tweets – all in one place.
Friends: An always up-to-date and backed-up address book of all students’ classmates, friends and campus contacts. Any time students lose or replace their phones, they can just reinstall the AT&T Campus Guide app to their new phones and all of their contacts are restored.
My Card: Students can easily share their customizable contact information to keep in touch with their friends, classmates, potential employers, alumni and advisors..
Info: Looking for more information? Click on Info for miscellaneous details about campus.

AT&T will begin pre-selling AT&T Campus Guide on July 29th. Schools that participate in the pilot period (July 29th through September 29th) will receive the application free of charge until October 1st.

Connect Facebook, Twitter, and BBM to your BlackBerry Contacts

Many different ways to contact

I think we can all agree that a BlackBerry has one primary purpose: communication. Text messages, emails, and that wonderful keyboard all come together to make the BlackBerry a hub of communication. In these new days of social media, those aren’t the only way to talk to others. Facebook, Twitter, and BlackBerry Messenger are just three newer ways to connect to the world around you.

The contacts application on your BlackBerry isn’t just a place to store your friends’ and family’s phone numbers and email addresses. Anniversaries, addresses, and birthdays are in there too, but that’s not what I’m talking about. Using the official apps for Twitter, Facebook, BBM, etc., you can link people you know from these social applications to their contact on your BlackBerry.

Drome – a local Canadian search application, world domination soon?

Drome

The word ‘drome’ is an odd one – it’s one of those words that has many different meanings. It could refer to a place to race or run, or could refer to something that moves together. It’s also a name of an application by Taste My City. Like many Local Search Applications, Drome can handle looking for Movies, Nightlife venues, Coffee shops/Internet Cafes, Hotels, Points of Interest and Restaurants. Depending on the city, you can also receive coupons for many locations via email. Your location is determined by GPS location, cell site or by manual input. Drome offers a few extras, depending on which type of search you are performing. When looking at bars and/or restaurants some locations may have an accessible menu and additionally list forms of payment accepted. For all entries, they at least have a mapped location and a phone number to call. Looking through the movies section, you can check out trailers, show times, galleries, reviews, plot synopsis and more. Extra options include options to add entries to your calendar/address book, various search or filter options and access to a favourites list.

At this point, Drome is only available in specific Canadian cities; Greater Toronto & Southern Ontario, Greater Vancouver Area, Montreal & Laval, Calgary, Ottawa, Quebec City, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Halifax. Cities in the UK and US will hopefully be announced soon. According to their website, there are plans to expand to Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and more. Drome still has some promise, but I still prefer Poynt as I can also see weather information, have the option to use Google Maps and have the ability to purchase tickets through the app. Of course, time will tell what Drome will bring to the table. If you want to check out Drome, you can get it for free from BlackBerry App World.

SugarnSync For BlackBerry 2.0 Update Has an Improved UI and New Features

Single largest update to application since it was first developed

SugarSync Logo

If you’re unfamiliar with SugarSync, it is a file back & sharing service similar to that of DropBox.  I say similar because I have come to be a true believer that SugarSync is superior to DropBox.  We’ve written about it in the past and like many I glazed over and thought “Oh whatever, DropBox is better” and did so without really looking at what SugarSync offered.  At CES2011 I met with Robb from SugarSync and bluntly asked “Why do you think SugarSync is better than DropBox?”  To my surprise I was given an answer I wasn’t prepared for from Robb, “DropBox is GREAT!  We’ll even back that folder up for you!”  With that bizarre answer, he had my attention and I looked further.

How to make your own visual address book on your BlackBerry smartphone

NHCBBA Tip of the Day!

Make a visual address book

BlackBerry OS6 makes it easy to add any contact to the home screen. This means you can turn any of your contacts into a shortcut that goes on the home screen (with their picture on it and everything). The shortcut will allow you to message your contact in a variety of ways, all from the home screen. But, let’s take that one step further. Instead of just storing your contact shortcuts on the All pane or in Favorites, you can make a visual address book by creating a folder and saving your most-used contacts there. No reason to go to the trouble of putting everyone in there, just the people you message the most.

Start by creating a new folder; you can only create new ones from the All pane (tray). You can’t make folders anywhere else. Make sure one of the visible icons is highlighted. It doesn’t matter which one, but the Add folder option won’t appear in the menu if nothing is highlighted. Press the menu key and select Add folder. Give your folder a name, and we’re ready to add some contacts to it.

Go to your contacts on your BlackBerry and highlight (don’t select) one you’d like to add to your visual address book. Press the menu key and choose Add to Home Screen. In the dialog box that opens, you’ll get options to rename your shortcut, mark it as a favorite, and choose what in folder to save the shortcut. Unless you want your shortcut in two different places, uncheck the box next to Mark as Favorite. Next to location, you’ll see the default setting is “Home.” We want to change that to the name of your new folder. Click Add, and your shortcut will be in your new folder.

Repeat as necessary to add more contacts. Once you’re done, you’ll have a quick list of all your most used contacts. At a glance, you’ll be able to find who you’re looking for. Unlike the actual Contacts, you can order your shortcuts any way you’d like. Clicking or touching the link will open their contact information. In addition, you’ll also get the person’s recent activity. Emails, Facebook posts, and tweets can all be found here. Select a shortcut and click & hold or open the menu to get a whole hosts of ways to contact your…er, contact.

Though this visual address book does the exact same thing as contacts, it makes things easier. Instead of cluttered with dozens of names, our project only contains those contacted most. We get a friendly face (or icon) to represent our contact; and because the shortcut is in a folder, you can put them in any order you desire. Most importantly, with a little practice, it becomes a super-fast way of connecting with someone…in a variety of ways

Please if away one else that might have any good tips please pass them our way to TIPS@NHCBBA.COM

LiveProfile now available for BlackBerry

LiveProfile for BlackBerry

LiveProfile is an awesome cross-platform messaging app for Android and iOS, that is now available for BlackBerry. It features a very nice dark UI, as well as a ton of features you would come to expect in a messaging app, and a few you wouldn’t. Here are some of those features:

  • Badges for sent, delivered, and read messages
  • Displays when a contact is typing (and when a contact is reading)
  • Ability to update status to Facebook and Twitter
  • Add contacts by scanning your address book, Twitter, and Facebook
  • PIN assigned to your account, for easy sharing
  • Coming Soon- Outgoing Photo Attachments

While we have seen some messengers come and go, or even just not live up to all of our high BBM standards, I think LiveProfile is by far the best of the bunch. It brings most of the core messaging features that we all need, and even adds a few other nice ones (Active Chat- Shows when contact is in the chat, reading messages). My favorite feature of LiveProfile is the way it adds friends to your contact list. Giving you the ability to scan your address book, Twitter, and Facebook is definitely the way to go, and is in no way intrusive, like some other messengers. It is also fast, I mean really fast. I dare say it’s more instant than BBM.

Overall I think LiveProfile is the best cross-platform messaging solution out there. If you haven’t checked it out, head over to their website for a free download. It is compatible with most BlackBerry devices running OS 4.5 and up. More screenshots after the break.
