The BlackBerry® Developer Conference is the developer community event that everyone talks about. It’s a premier showcase for what can be done with BlackBerry apps, attended by thousands of the world’s most enthusiastic developers, BlackBerry experts, and Research In Motion® (RIM®) partners. It’s the place to get technical, code-driven information that can be applied to projects; the place where new tools and technologies can be experienced for the first time; the place for getting your questions answered, or finding the inspiration to go further with mobile applications than you ever imagined possible.

Update on BlackBerry PlayBook Updates: Monthly software updates on hold in favor of a Tablet OS 2.0 Re-Launch?!

With all of the new BlackBerry Smartphone excitement this week (be sure to check out our reviews of the Bold 9900/9930 and Torch 9860/9850/9810), we forgot to note on the blogs the BlackBerry PlayBook’s 120 day anniversary. Is it a milestone worthy of a joyous celebration? Not quite. Though the PlayBook is powerfully awesome and does have a ton of great things about it — I spent an hour last night watching music videos on the new Vevo app — we’re still waiting for some MAJOR features to hit, like Native Email and the Android App Player. And while our BlackBerry PlayBook forums have been buzzing with users anxiously waiting for the next monthly-ish update in what we thought would be a “steady cadence” of updates, it’s now looking like those shorter-term planned updates are on hold in favor of a much bigger PlayBook 2.0 re-launch.

BlackBerry DEVCON Americas: 2010 highlights and 2011 registration discount info

BlackBerry DEVCON Americas 2011

As we plan excitedly and build passionately towards BlackBerry® DEVCON Americas, BlackBerry DEVCON Asia and BlackBerry DEVCON Europe, we’re taking the opportunity again to ask you about your highlights from 2010 and requests for BlackBerry DEVCON Americas – the first stop in our world series of developer events.

My top three personal favorite moments from 2010 were:

  • Meeting with BlackBerry Developer Group Managers from around the world at a special reception in The View lounge on the 39th floor of the Marriott Marquis. The managers also shared their experience and tips for launching groups at a special community session.
  • At a special evening event, we highlighted some of our favorite Super Apps from the 2010 BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge (go here to enter the 2011 challenge!)
  • Mike Lazaridis welcoming an excited and passionate Dan Dodge of QNX on stage to talk about the ultra-powerful BlackBerry® Tablet OS. So much energy on stage and in the crowd!

Check out the BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 highlights photos and videos section for even more!

Your feedback from BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 is embedded in every aspect of the BlackBerry DEVCON Americas plan. One significant way we’ve implemented your feedback is that the conference is now three days instead of four – although we’ve kept the very best of the fourth day’s content in special community sessions throughout the event. That said, what else do you want to see at BlackBerry DEVCON Americas 2011? Let us know your ideas in the comments below!

We’re committed to making BlackBerry DEVCON Americas 2011 the biggest and best yet, and are excited to be offering great deals on our conference access, as well as alumni and hotel discounts. In order to give everyone the opportunity to register at our early bird rate (only $699 plus tax) we are extending this offer until August 26th – register now!

See you in San Francisco!

Back during BlackBerry World RIM announced they would be expanding their BlackBerry Developer Conferences to new areas this year. Europe was included this time around, as was Asia after having hosted the first DevCon Asia in Indonesia back in January. The dates and locations at the time of the announcement hadn’t been worked out but now we have dates and a location for DevCon Europe and a location for DevCon Asia:

If you’re a BlackBerry developer and are planning on participating in either of the DevCon events scheduled, RIM has extended the call for papers until Friday July 15th for BlackBerry DEVCON Asia and Friday September 16th for DevCon Europe.

RIM Traveling EMEA for Developer “Meet the PlayBook” Events

BlackBerry PlayBook Flash Support

Now that RIM has formally announced that they will be having a DevCon in Europe they seem to be making a bigger push to engage developers there and throughout the EMEA. The latest effort in that vein is the announcement of four “Meet the PlayBook” events scattered around the region. I am not sure what made RIM choose these cities but I am hoping it is based on interest. Here are the event dates and locations:

Each of the events is running a parallel business and technology track on the same day so there should be something for everybody. Here is how RIM describes it:

We are delighted to announce our exclusive BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet developer and business seminar series in association with Adobe®, which we’ll be taking on the road across the EMEA region. At our exclusive – and free! – half-day event, you’ll get hands-on access to our new tablet and find out everything you need to know about developing a multi-screen strategy for a client, converting your existing Adobe® Flex or Adobe® AIR® apps, or turning your ideas into successful, revenue-generating reality.
