Drome – a local Canadian search application, world domination soon?

Drome

The word ‘drome’ is an odd one – it’s one of those words that has many different meanings. It could refer to a place to race or run, or could refer to something that moves together. It’s also a name of an application by Taste My City. Like many Local Search Applications, Drome can handle looking for Movies, Nightlife venues, Coffee shops/Internet Cafes, Hotels, Points of Interest and Restaurants. Depending on the city, you can also receive coupons for many locations via email. Your location is determined by GPS location, cell site or by manual input. Drome offers a few extras, depending on which type of search you are performing. When looking at bars and/or restaurants some locations may have an accessible menu and additionally list forms of payment accepted. For all entries, they at least have a mapped location and a phone number to call. Looking through the movies section, you can check out trailers, show times, galleries, reviews, plot synopsis and more. Extra options include options to add entries to your calendar/address book, various search or filter options and access to a favourites list.

At this point, Drome is only available in specific Canadian cities; Greater Toronto & Southern Ontario, Greater Vancouver Area, Montreal & Laval, Calgary, Ottawa, Quebec City, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Halifax. Cities in the UK and US will hopefully be announced soon. According to their website, there are plans to expand to Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and more. Drome still has some promise, but I still prefer Poynt as I can also see weather information, have the option to use Google Maps and have the ability to purchase tickets through the app. Of course, time will tell what Drome will bring to the table. If you want to check out Drome, you can get it for free from BlackBerry App World.

Free BlackBerry Travel App Updated Again to v1.0.350.99

192133192135 192137

I know that RIM is licensing their BlackBerry Travel app using WorldMate’s tech but even so RIM rarely releases updates this close to each other. That is unless there is some critical bug that needed squashing. Nikolaus let us know that RIM has updated BlackBerry Travel to v1.0.350.99 which is only slightly newer than the v1.0.341.99 released on the 23rd. In typical RIM fashion there is no changelog to help us decide if the 3MB download is worth it, but we sort of found an update in BetaZone change log that seems kind of helpful:

  • Added Bold 9000 support.
    • Fixed issue of disappearing itineraries.
    • Resolved device freezing (white screen) on launch of application.
    • Fixed settings reset after battery pull:
    • Caused TripCatch to turn off.
    • Caused users to lose their home city until next sync.
    • Updated the splat mechanism to fix various bugs.
    • Added Hotel promotions in hotels results screen.
    • General push framework fixes.
    • Fixed airport selection on new flight.
    • New UI control in weather card.
    • UI fixes for LinkedIn screen.
    • Various small UI changes and fixes ? All screens.
    • Improved swipe behavior for home screen cards.
    • Added ?All cities? option:
    • Will show multiple weather displays (one per each city).
    • Will show all LinkedIn connections per trip.
    • Yelp links will go to Yelp search screen (instead of results), with the selected category pre-populated as well as the first city.
    • Added sort menu items in Yelp screen.
    • Added empty images to LinkedIn field like in LinkedIn card.
    • Added state to airport name in auto complete field.
    • Currency screen: Corrected concurrency issues and added ‘Update Rates’ option in menu.
    • Implemented key press: ‘T’ & ‘B’ scrolls to Top and Bottom accordingly.
    • Added timer for ensuring GPS deactivation.
    • Fixed XML encoding in BlackBerry Maps.
    • Fixed calendar sync.

PS: I am sure we will make Mike Lazaridis cry by the possibly wasted 3MB upgrade data usage.

Urbanspoon gets an update – Now compatible with BlackBerry 6

Urbanspoon for BlackBerry

Urbanspoon is a great website for people that enjoy eating out. You can check out restaurant reviews from food critics, bloggers, and everyday people. In 2009 Urbanspoon released a free app for BlackBerry to help people like me, who can never seem to decide where to eat. It’s a simple concept. First you enter the area you want to search for restaurants or let Urbanspoon use your GPS location. Once it finds that area, it presents you a slot machine type interface with 3 tumblers. The first is for the neighborhood or area, the second is the type of cuisine, and the third is cost. You can choose for any of these categories to be locked, for example if you ONLY want Japanese restaurants to show, you would highlight that option and then click the little lock below. After that you can click or shake your device (depending on what BlackBerry you have, of course) and the tumblers spin. The application randomly chooses an area, cuisine and price range for you look at. If you click on the name of the chosen restaurant you can get details such as contact info, maps, and you can even open up the mobile version of the website which will take you directly to the reviews and information for that restaurant.

It’s a fun app that can help you make some very important decisions like what to have for lunch Tuesday or where to take that blind date your friend hooked you up with. Best of all, it’s FREE and there is a version for all devices running OS 4.2.1 or higher, and was recently updated to include devices on BB6. Urbanspoon is supported in Canada and the US as well as Australia and the UK. Pick it up today at the link below!

Free Poynt App For BlackBerry Updated With New Local Events Feature Powered By Eventful

Free Poynt App For BlackBerry Updated With New Local Events Feature Powered By Eventful

The Poynt team let me know they’ve updated their free BlackBerry application with a new feature adding more relevant local content. The new feature and carousel item is called Events and is powered by Eventful, a leading digital media company connecting 20 million consumers to local events.

The new Events feature allows users to search by performer, event or venue nearby, by event date or by category, including festivals, concerts and sporting events.  Users can then view details such as maps, photos, browse websites, view seating charts and get detailed performer information. As well, users can add events to their device calendar or send details to friends.

Poynt harnesses the power of multiple applications in one intuitive package. Users can search for businesses and retailers, gas stations, people, local weather, find movies and buy tickets, find restaurants and reserve a table, and now stay connected with local events. Poynt allows users to go one step further–mapping locations, adding results to calendar or emailing results to friends without exiting the application.

Poynt has always been one of my favorite apps. It offers a lot of very useful features whether you’re traveling and need to find something or want to discover something new in a familiar area. Very helpful app if you’re craving a slice of pizza in a random town, for example. I highly recommend it especially since it’s free!

The latest update, version 1.7.0.47, is available for download a m.poynt.com but has yet to show up in the BlackBerry App World. For more info go to poynt.com or check out the press release below.
