Review: BullGuard Mobile Security 10 For BlackBerry v10.0.233

Do you remember my post on the ZeuS trojan? With the issue of the ZeuS Trojan BlackBerry variant targeting BlackBerry devices, I set out on a mission. My mission was to seek the antivirus/security softwares that are capable of defending your BlackBerry from this and other malware. One such software is BullGuard. Check it out…

I sent out emails inquiring who had the virus definitions for the ZeuS, and the only one who responded was BullGuard. I thought it would be a great idea to do a review on this product and let you see how it works. I didn’t test the antivirus for good reason, but I did show the definitions from BullGuard. BullGuard has had the definitions and able to detect and remove the ZeuS trojan since the end of September 2010! It detects the trojan before it’s installed.

Customer service is fantastic through email. The live chat isn’t as helpful, but through email they are fast to respond and are very precise with answers and assistance. The app itself installs quickly, and with a key you have after purchase, you set it up and you’re ready to go. The nice thing about this app is that you have a dashboard to send commands and view your device.

The BullGuard Mobile Security 10 if you look closely, is very similar to SMobile security Shield, and if you look at the screens, you’ll see Junos Secured. Junos Networks is the company that acquired SMobile Systems. BullGuard includes the following for the device through the app:

  • Antivirus and Antispyware with real time detection and removal of viruses and spyware via direct download, SMS, MMS, e-mail, Bluetooth, and infrared.
  • Antitheft: Look and wipe remotely, track your phone via GPS (I can tell you that when you click on the larger map, it’s very precise).
  • Parental Control: Monitor your child’s calls, text messages, and photos.
  • Firewall
  • Spamlifter: Block calls and messages
  • Basic Backup: Contacts and Calendar
  • Forgetfulness: If you forgot where you placed your phone, you can log in and have the sound alarm so you can find your phone.
  • Support: Free support 24/7

So let’s take a look at the app. You’ll see three options:

  • Antivirus
  • Parental Control
  • Basic Backup

If you click on the Antivirus, you will see Monitor Status as Enabled (you can disable this), Last Update, and the License Expiration. If you click on Options, you can choose Scan Now and the following are there for you to check to scan:

  • Scan Applications
  • Scan Internal Files
  • Scan SD Card
  • Exclude Media Files
  • Custom Scan

You can check whichever ones you want, click the Options and choose Start Scan. From the Antivirus Screen, in the Options you will see the OnDemand Scan Log and the FileMonitor Log, Quarantine, and the Virus List. I’ve chosen a few screenshots with the ZeuS trojan highlighted (there’s two of them). The Settings option allows you to disable or enable your Antivirus. The Antivirus will update frequently when you go into it. Knowing your phone is protected is a great safety measure.

Next is the Parental Control. It shows what monitoring is enabled, the Log File size, and the last posted date. Options will not allow you to disable this from the device. This makes it great for the tech savvy teen or preteen. You control it from your dashboard.

Basic Backup Tells you the Last Backup and Last Restore. Options allow you to backup or restore. This is a fantastic option for when you break your phone or lose it or it’s stolen. Wipe it and restore to the new replacement.

Now let’s take a look at the BullGuard Mobile Protection Centre.

As you can see from the screenshot above you have the following commands that you can send to your device:

  • Lock Device
  • Unlock Device
  • Locate Device
  • Backup And Restore
  • Wipe Device
  • Scream Locate

The following Tabs are also listed at the top:

  • Home
  • Settings
  • Reports
  • Alert Setup
  • Support/Help

The first task I tried is to lock the device. I press the command and am told it was successful. A few seconds later, the following screen appeared on my phone:

Then of course I unlock it by command. BullGuard sends SMS text commands to your device. The phone then responds.

Here’s another screenshot of the next tab. This is where you choose the messages being monitored.

If you’re worried about your child keeping in contact with certain individuals, you can look it up. You can also see the commands you’ve sent to the device.

Here you can set to be alerted if any of the following are placed to the device being monitored. And here’s another bonus I like: the different definitions of text messaging.

All the commands work great, even GPS Locate. If you click on the larger map, it will show you exactly where the device is. I like knowing that it’s able to protect my device and security, and if a child were to have the device, they’d be unable to change the monitor settings.

It’s very similar to the SMobile security Shield, which was one of my favorite apps. It was reliable and removed spyware quickly. Seeing the similar settings and definitions, I can say that the antivirus will work just as well. They’ve gotten even more tuned with the GPS locate too.

The app is easy to use. The only tricky part was setting it up, but the customer service through e-mail was great and they were more than helpful. The dashboard is easy to use and allows you to choose what to monitor, to back up remotely, and wipe it remotely. It’s great whether you’re the parent or the person seeking protection. You could be sure your preteen and your college student is safe. You don’t have to monitor anything on the phone if you choose not to. But the GPS and the remote commands is especially helpful and assuring. Not to mention able to protect you and your device from threats such as the ZeuS trojan. There’s always been threats such as Spyware which is scary, and malware should be a concern. BullGuard is available for $29.95, which isn’t much when considering the threats it’s protecting you from and the features it can offer you.
